Popular Australian tag team loses titles, disbands
Perhaps the most popular tag team in Australia today, The Brat Pack, lost their Melbourne City Wrestling tag team titles in surprising fashion at this past Saturday’s New Horizons event from the Thornbury Theatre.
The Natural Classics, the team of brothers Tome and Stevie Filips, were able to defeat the team of Nick Bury and Mitch Waterman in a no disqualification, tornado tag rules match. The victory came after the Filips had isolated Mitch Waterman and punished his leg with multiple chair shots. Bury was forced to submit on behalf of the team in order to save Waterman from serious injury. Waterman had recently won MCW’s prestigious Ballroom Brawl battle royal, giving him a shot at an MCW title of his choosing in the future. Although the submission cost the team their tag team gold, it was the right move by Bury to help preserve his friend’s health for the opportunities he has lined up in the future.
What happened next sent shockwaves through the crowd on hand. Mitch Waterman made his way to the ring later on in the show and made his intentions known. He intended to use his championship opportunity on a rematch for the tag team titles. However, his partner Bury would have none of it, rushing to the ring and convincing Waterman that it was his time to pursue singles gold with his championship opportunity. The two partners debated momentarily until Bury insisted that the Brat Pack would be breaking up so Waterman could focus on his singles career. Instead of a fight breaking out between the two, which can often be the case when a tag team disbands, the two agreed to respectfully part ways and embraced.
Elsewhere on the card, MCW Intercommonwealth Champion Lochy Hendricks defeated Ritchie Taylor to retain his title. The MCW World Championship was also on the line with Adam Brooks retaining in a defense against Robbie Eagles. The powerful Caveman Ugg also made his intentions known that he’s eyeing up Brooks and his world championship.
There’s a lot of action surrounding MCW’s titles right now, especially the world championship. It will be interesting to see if Mitch Waterman will opt to pursue that title, and if so, will he have to get through the ultra talented Adam Brooks or the super powerful Caveman Ugg to do so?
