Youngest Congolese Champion Ever In Action
In the Republic of Congo, wrestling is just as popular as it is in it’s next door neighbor, the Democratic Republic of Congo. At a recent wrestling “gala,” as they’re known in the Congo, the youngest champion in the history of Congolese wrestling was in action.
The gala took place outdoors in Pointe Noire in the Quartier Chic district over the course of five days with wrestling taking place each night. Each of those nights, the youngest champion in the history of Congolese wrestling, Sogor Le Cogneur, wrestled an opponent.
The event stretched from the 15th to 20th of March. Besides Sogor, other members of his home promotion (or club as they’re called in the Congo) Club Super Ring were also in action including Bill Désert, Seigneur Chilva, Bizan,Pape Dracula, Dix Vision, Aboubacar, Chico, and Aigle Noire. Some of the other wrestlers that competed include John Cena (Angola), Super Malé, Cent Vingt Kilo, Ninja, Makila, Abarabwa, Kaïman, Sanza, and Nganga Kissi.
Although Sogor Le Cogneur was in action, his championship title was not on the line. Sogor is currently the District Number Six champion. The championship system in Republic of The Congo is organized by geographic regions. The title hierarchy would work as follows. Cities are divided by districts and each district has a champion. The next step up would be the interpool titles. These titles would cover multiple districts or cities. The peak of the championship system would be the champions of the Congo, whose titles are recognized as the top prize for wrestlers in the country.
Wrestling for five days straight can take a toll on any wrestler’s body. But apparently this is not the case for the twenty-one year old champion Sogor. “I wrestle every day. I have a body of iron,” Sogor said when asked about this difficult task. Sogor likes to call himself the most electrifying man in the history of Congolese wrestling. Time will tell how Sogor Le Cogneur will be remembered among the all time greats of The Congo. But so far, he is on a path to the very top of Congolese wrestling quicker than anyone else before him.
