Sharpman eyes Nigerian national light heavyweight title
“I am sharper than [a] knife now’’ - Mr. Sharpman
‘’Who is a sharpman? A sharpman is a man that is sharper than other men. I am the sharpman. I am now sharper than [a] knife and that is the ultimate reason that has made me to go in search of glory on my own. I know the stuff I am made of. I don’t need to be told that I am a good and talented pro wrestling talent. Tag team wrestling has tied me down to a spot over the years and I’ve got to liberate myself now. De Grippers as a tag team has made [an] impact over the years and no doubt about that but then, I need to go and search for singular glory. This is the right time to do that. Solo action is my focus and that is what will make me become the Nigerian Pro Wrestling Federation (NPWF) light heavyweight champion and title holder and I will definitely claim it during the Asagba of Asaba’s International championship in the last week of July 2021 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State. No stopping me. I have seen it already. I deserve it. I claim it. This is the set time’’
Mr. Sharpman, whose real name is Augustine Okafor, did not mince words when expressing himself of his heart’s desire of clinching the Nigerian National Light Heavyweight Championship title and becoming the belt holder; a dream he had some years back and which should come to reality this year.
The talented grappler, who came to Lagos in 1984 at the tender age of 12 years old from Okporo in Orlu, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, where he was born on the 15th August, 1972, is prepared, is ready and set to be the Nigerian national champion according to his calculation. Imo State is one of the 36 States of Nigeria, located in the southeast region of the country and was formed in 1976 when it split from the former East-Central State, is bordered by Abia State on the east, Delta State to the West, Anambra State on the north, and Rivers State to the south. Sharpman is loaded with gimmicks to get the title on his waist.
Sharpman, who specialises in making mincemeat out of opponents in the ring, is an over three decades pro wrestling veteran who no one needs to tell what to do in the ring. Sharpman has pounded plenty of his challengers and his skills and agility have won him many admirers. He is referred to as the ‘’Excellence of Execution’’ and his excellency should be crowned with a national title in the soonest possible time. He has a spectacular way of wrestling, as I have never seen anyone combine this level of gymnastic ability, martial arts skill and pro style of wrestling with such awesome effectiveness before.
Sharpman is a powerful master of the game, and a great wrestler of all time, who has been making life miserable for his opponents in Nigerian squared circles and even beyond, having competed in Cameroon and Ghana before now. He wrestled with Cameroon’s Kirikou during Pro Wrestling Africa’s Battle of Yaounde 2015 in Yaounde, Cameroon, and he defeated him as a master of the game. While The Wolf NDA, also from Cameroon, was a visiting wrestler during the ‘’Asaba 2016 Return of Glory’’ at Asaba, Delta State and will not forget Sharpman’s prowess in the ring in his lifetime as they both squared off together.
‘’Sharpie,’’ as he is fondly called by other wrestlers, was trained by Lion Bone in 1989 at the National Stadium before Jimmy Palm ‘’The African Dream’’ did the finishing touches and impacted him with pro wrestling skills which turned him into a superstar. He has also trained lots of talents, among which is Triple ‘’J’’ (Joyce Joseph from Jos). He had Mike Bing of Congo as his first opponent in Lagos in 1990 and lists Stephen Mba of Cameroon as his toughest opponent, while his most memorable match is a tag team match against the African Demons.
The celebrated Sharpman, who lists Ultimate Warrior as his most respected wrestler, is already in contact with his community people back home in his home town as charity begins at home. ‘’Any river that forgets his source will definitely dry up. I am in contact with my people back home. I know the kind of support I can get from my people if they are well carried along on my plans on the proposed title project, yes I see it as a project which must be executed. I have reached out to the Okporo community people in Orlu, under the Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State. Also in contact with the Orlu local government area authority team members as well as the chiefs in council at Okporo’’ explained the wrestling talent who has contributed his own quota to pro wrestling development over the years in our part of the world, especially from Nigeria, the most populated nation in Africa, which is the second largest continent in size and population after Asia.
