Pro wrestling event set for Mount Everest on May 23rd
Guinness Book of Records will be on hand to verify attempt at the highest altitude pro wrestling match to ever take place
The pro wrestling scene in Nepal has at times been synonymous with outdoor events that showcase the country’s natural scenery, including the mountainous terrain of the Himalayas. However, Nepal’s most famous mountain of them all and the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest, has never hosted a pro wrestling event. But that is all about to change on May 23rd, 2024.
The Nepal Women Wrestling Foundation will be holding a pro wrestling event on Mount Everest with an attempt to set the Guinness Book World Record for the highest altitude pro wrestling match. WrestleMap can confirm that the fees required to have the Guinness personnel on hand have already been paid and staff from the famous world record book will be on hand to witness the attempt. With the successful completion of the event, there will likely be two new additions to the Guinness Book.
Two new editions because, as of now, the show will feature two wrestling matches. One men’s bout and one women’s. In the women’s match, Nepal’s first female pro wrestler and the founder and promoter of the Nepal Women Wrestling Foundation, Unika, will take on Dani Mo who will be making the trip to Nepal from the United States to take part in this historic event. Dani Mo made the official announcement of her participation in this event on her social media pages this week, confirming that she will be stepping foot in the ring with Unika on Mount Everest.
The second record setting match is also very noteworthy. In a deathmatch, The Kovu Brandon of Pakistan, the current Revolution Eastern Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion, will defend his title against Samrat Virendra of India. Pakistan vs. India pro wrestling matches are not a very common occurrence and this will likely be big news in both countries due to the very real rivalry between the two states. Sources have shared with WrestleMap that it would be nearly impossible to hold an India vs. Pakistan match in either country due to the fear of violence breaking out in the crowd as a result of the outcome of the match. In Nepal and on Mount Everest seems like one of the safest places to pull off what will already be a very dangerous match.
There are several logistic questions surrounding this event that WrestleMap has attempted to get some clarity on. First off, we have confirmed that a ring will be present for the matches which seems like a logistical nightmare. While the matches will take place at Everest Base Camp, and there is a road that runs to base camp, that road is on the north side of Everest in the Tibetan region of China. There is no road leading to base camp from the Nepali side of the mountain on the south. As of now, the plan that was relayed to us by a source indicated that the Nepali army would likely be helping with ring transportation using a helicopter. I would assume that this is how the wrestlers will be transported to base camp as well, since it doesn’t seem plausible that they would be expected to hike to base camp before wrestling and then be forced to hike back down. The difficulty of getting to base camp from the Nepali side of Everest may also mean that there will be little to no live fans on hand for the show. The matches are expected to eventually end up on YouTube.
As for the bouts themselves, surely the high altitude will put a heavy toll on the wrestlers competing. It remains to be seen how that will affect their performance and the outcomes of the two historic matches.
